Life Code 29: Live Refined
Life gives us experience. Experience gives us information. What we discover becomes available for our refinement.
Live Refined is the capacity to recognize what our lived experience reveals and allow what we discover to shape how we live.
We all move through life doing what makes the most sense to each one of us.
We speak, create, relate, choose, and experience the results of our actions. Those results give us information. As we experience more, our perspective develops.
What makes sense to us changes and the way we live changes with it.
This creates the living experience of refinement:
LIVE → EXPERIENCE → NOTICE → REFLECT → DISCOVER → REFINE → LIVE
We live.
We experience what our living creates.
We notice what we experience.
We reflect on what the experience reveals.
We discover something previously unavailable to us.
We refine how we live through what we discover.
We live from that refinement.
And the cycle continues.
Every experience gives us more information. Every discovery gives us more to live from. Every refinement becomes part of the next experience.
This is life. This is how we live.
Live Refined is an ongoing relationship with discovery.
THE TWO ASPECTS:
Two aspects work together to create the experience of this Life Code.
1. PERCEPTION
Perception is how we take in, organize, and interpret information from our experience to understand what is happening around us and within us.
We filter what we experience through everything we have already experienced, our expectations, beliefs, emotions, associations, and biases. This shapes what we notice and what the experience means to us.
What happens and how we perceive what happens can be fundamentally different.
If something happens that aligns with what we expect we experience it as flow.
When something happens that challenges what we expect, we experience friction.
Friction gets our attention and is a signal that there may be more here for us to perceive.
It gives us an opportunity to notice the difference between what happened, what we expected, how we experienced it, and what we understood it to mean.
We can ask:
What happened?
How did I experience it?
What did it mean to me?
This gives us new information to reflect on and creates the opportunity to perceive more.
EXPECTATION → EXPERIENCE → FLOW or FRICTION → PERCEPTION
As our perception expands, we can recognize friction as part of alignment. What challenges our expectations can become the very information that guides our refinement.
2. ADJUSTMENT
Adjustment is how we respond to what our experience reveals by changing how we approach, engage with, or live something.
Once something becomes available to our perception, we can then reflect on it allowing us to consider what happened and discover what becomes available to us after we gather more information.
Adjustment allows us to develop through experience. As our perception expands, our willingness to adjust determines how fully we embody what we discover.
Adjustment is where discovery becomes action.
The way we lived created the experience through which our current perception became available for the subsequent adjustment to take place.
We can receive that experience as information rather than requiring ourselves to reject who we were in order to move forward.
Perception helps us translate our experience.
Adjustment helps us discover how to change how we live.
THE MOVEMENT:
Refinement often arrives through an experience that initially feels harsh.
Something hits.
An outcome hurts. A relationship dynamic activates us. Something we created produces an unexpected result. A comparison brings shame forward. A belief collides with lived experience. Our experience challenges what we expected.
The intensity gets our attention.
Then comes reflection.
Reflection is where perception and adjustment meet.
What happened?
What did I experience?
What is this showing me?
What can I see now?
And through reflection, the harsh experience can become poignant.
Poignance is when an experience touches us deeply enough to bring us fully into relationship with what it reveals.
The word poignant carries the sense of something that pricks or stings. It reaches us. We feel it. It matters.
What initially felt harsh now has our attention. Through reflection, we experience the feeling while also perceiving what happened and recognizing what adjustment becomes available.
The poignance brings us present.
The more deeply we can be present with what the experience reveals, the more available its information becomes to us.
This is what we call an evolutionary epiphany:
“Oh. Now I see.”
The experience becomes something we can actually live from and not just a good idea we’ll forget about tomorrow and return to our previous way of living.
The movement then becomes:
HARSH → REFLECTION → POIGNANCE → REFINEMENT
What initially felt like impact becomes information that expands how we live.
SHAME AS INFORMATION
For many on the journey of self-discovery, shame can easily arise when new information becomes visible.
This can take a moment of friction that is available for our expansion and turns it into an undertow of emotions that do not empower us to move forward.
They were right.
I was wrong.
I should have known.
I should have done better.
Live Refined invites us to receive new information through curiosity, allowing what we discover to become useful information for how we live.
Shame sees new information as something bad and information that defines what is fundamentally wrong with me as a person.
When we shift from shame-driven thoughts into empowered curiosity about what the experience is revealing, we create the opportunity for refinement.
Shame narrows our perception.
Curiosity expands what becomes available to perceive.
As we become available to more than the interpretation held inside the shame loop, new perspectives and new adjustments become available.
REFINEMENT THROUGH RELATIONSHIP
Life Codes help us develop these ways of being internally so that we can carry what we develop into relationship with others while remaining connected to ourselves.
Live Refined therefore begins with the ability to see ourselves, listen to ourselves, receive ourselves, and refine our lives while continuing to belong to ourselves.
And this carries a larger principle: I am included in the humanity that I want to flourish.
If our deepest orientation is toward human flourishing, our own flourishing belongs within that commitment.
Self-love and collective care become mutually reinforcing.
When we learn to hold ourselves through our own experience, we develop the capacity to remain with ourselves while experiencing others.
We can experience harshness without reducing ourselves or another person to the harshness.
We can move through different perspectives without requiring shame.
We can allow ourselves and others to change without condemning who anyone was before the discovery.
We can offer ourselves the same curiosity, compassion, and space for refinement that we offer the people we love.
The relationship we develop with ourselves becomes the relationship we are capable of sustaining with others.
LIVE REFINED
Live Refined is the practice of turning lived experience into usable wisdom that expands what becomes possible for how we live our life.
We live our life which gives us experience.
We see what the experience reveals.
We reflect.
The experience becomes poignant.
We discover.
We refine.
And then we live what we have learned.
Every harsh experience can reveal something available for us to perceive. Through reflection, perception and adjustment work together, transforming what we discover into a more expansive way of living.
